What's The Difference?

We made this wine during New Zealand's 2020 lockdown, so you know it's something a bit special! If you know and love our Giesen Estate Sauv, we promise this wine will be a step up.

Picked from special parcels in the Awatere Valley, with portions gently aged in oak, this refreshing Sauvignon offers something smooth and vibrant that epitomises one of the best wine regions in the world.

Why Should You Try It?

Just take a look at what the critics had to say! There were so many amazing reviews, we've had to put them all further down the page to make sure they all fit. Our 2020 vintage was stunning, so you can be sure this premium wine will be a winner!

Ranked #1 2020 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc of 64 tasted.

95 Points, 5 Stars

"From two blocks in the Awatere Valley with typical subregional flavours of lemongrass, green capsicum, oyster-shell, lime zest and pineapple flavours supported by lovely juicy acidity. Impressive purity and an ethereal texture."

Awarded 93 Points, Excellent

"A calm satin textured bouquet leading to ripe citrus, soft sage and basil herb qualities, mineral, lees and youthful varietal appeal. On the palate - tense, vibrant, fresh and youthful with a core of fresh white peach, lemon, sage and mineral flavours. The firm youthful texture with acidity and fruit spice, lees and moderate alcohol dovetail nicely into a lengthy, balanced and true Sauvignon Blanc finish."

Candice Chow

Writer for Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Awarded 94 Points, 5 Stars

"The nose is softly full, vibrant with penetrating aromas of limes, lychees, melded with elderflower and spicy notes of fresh-cut herbs. Medium-bodied, dry to taste, the palate is elegantly presented, crunchy lime sorbet underlined lychees, passionfruit, along with white spices and elderflower cordial."

WineState Magazine

Awarded 4.5 Stars

"Already delicious, this distinctive Awatere Valley wine was hand-picked and handled in a mix of stainless steel tanks, French oak barriques and German oak Fuders.  Bright, light green, it is a ripely scented, lively, medium to full-bodied wine, with very good intensity of fresh melon, passionfruit and herb flavours, balanced acidity and a dry finish."

NZ Wine Rater

Awarded 90 Points

"Pungently aromatic, strongly in the herbal camp with forest leaves, cut grass and smoldering gun-flint characters. Dry, restrained, with a taut gravelly acid structure that finishes crisp and firm."

Sam Kim

Writer for Wine Orbit

Awarded 94 Points, 5 Stars

"It's beautifully composed and wonderfully flavoursome, showing passionfruit, kiwifruit, kaffir lime and white floral aromas on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and fruit intensity, finishing impressively long and delicious. At its best: now to 2024."

Patrick Eckel

Awarded 93 Points

"Piercing aromatics of boysenberry and passionfruit with some grassy tones. The palate is vibrant and enjoys tropical fruits that are offset by a herbaceous edge and taut lines of acidity that give both focus and length. A very impressive release at the price point."

The Finer Details

Here are the in-depth details to help you learn what makes this wine premium & delicious!

How Does It Taste?

Expect aromas of fresh herbs with green pineapple and kaffir lime, with subtle salt air characters. Enjoy crispness on the palate, balanced by richness from the barrel-fermented component. Savour the flavours of grilled pineapple with a mineral edge and subtle tomato stalk on the finish.

Where Are The Grapes Grown?

Fruit is hand selected from heavy soil vineyards in the Awatere Valley, a premium sub-region in Marlborough. Awatere Valley is slightly cooler, drier, windier with higher elevation and is known for great minerality and texture.

2020 was a great year for Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc, with clean flavours of wild herbs, tomato leaf and green pineapple. Fruit came from two blocks in the Awatere, both displaying exceptional Awatere characters, one being more tropical with green pineapple flavours, and the other being quite herbal. The marriage between the two blocks gives a wonderfully aromatic and delicate Sauvignon Blanc that is classic Awatere in character.

Why Is Marlborough Such A Famous Wine Region?

Great question! Tucked away in the corner of the world, Marlborough New Zealand has a truly amazing landscape for winemaking.

Ancient glacial soils and stony riverbeds; glorious sunny days and colder nights to snap-chill all that beautiful flavour building up in the grapes; proximity to both the mountains and the sea - all of this combines to produce remarkable fruit that we're proud to create wine with.

And because of this huge amount of variation in our stunning region, our winemakers have the power to create distinctive and varied wines with unique flavour profiles.

How Is The Wine Made?

Just as the 2020 harvest began, the New Zealand government announced a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 - so you could say this is one for the history books! Despite the adversities that this put on the team, 2020 produced some spectacular results with top quality fruit, and what will be known for a long time to come as an outstanding vintage.

After picking from two specially selected blocks in the Awatere Valley and marrying them together, we age this Sauvignon Blanc on lees for three to four months to build a beautiful mouth-feel. We use some stainless steel and a select portion of the wine is aged in a mix of small 300L French oak barriques and 1000L German Fuder oak barrels.
