How Does It Taste?

Where Are The Grapes Grown?
Fruit is hand selected from heavy soil vineyards in the Awatere Valley, a premium sub-region in Marlborough. Awatere Valley is slightly cooler, drier, windier with higher elevation and is known for great minerality and texture.
2020 was a great year for Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc, with clean flavours of wild herbs, tomato leaf and green pineapple. Fruit came from two blocks in the Awatere, both displaying exceptional Awatere characters, one being more tropical with green pineapple flavours, and the other being quite herbal. The marriage between the two blocks gives a wonderfully aromatic and delicate Sauvignon Blanc that is classic Awatere in character.
Why Is Marlborough Such A Famous Wine Region?
Great question! Tucked away in the corner of the world, Marlborough New Zealand has a truly amazing landscape for winemaking.
Ancient glacial soils and stony riverbeds; glorious sunny days and colder nights to snap-chill all that beautiful flavour building up in the grapes; proximity to both the mountains and the sea - all of this combines to produce remarkable fruit that we're proud to create wine with.
And because of this huge amount of variation in our stunning region, our winemakers have the power to create distinctive and varied wines with unique flavour profiles.
How Is The Wine Made?
Just as the 2020 harvest began, the New Zealand government announced a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 - so you could say this is one for the history books! Despite the adversities that this put on the team, 2020 produced some spectacular results with top quality fruit, and what will be known for a long time to come as an outstanding vintage.
After picking from two specially selected blocks in the Awatere Valley and marrying them together, we age this Sauvignon Blanc on lees for three to four months to build a beautiful mouth-feel. We use some stainless steel and a select portion of the wine is aged in a mix of small 300L French oak barriques and 1000L German Fuder oak barrels.
